As we age, we develop facial wrinkles. Over the decades, pharmaceutical manufacturers have created what are called dermal fillers to minimize these wrinkles by, essentially, filling them with a substance to “plump” the wrinkles so that they are less visible. The list of dermal fillers includes injectables such as Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, Belotero Balance®, Bellafill®, Restylane®, and others.
Galderma, the company that created Restylane®, also created some area-specific dermal fillers to address wrinkles in specific areas: Restylane® Refyne and Defyne are used for wrinkles in the nasolabial folds (the lines from the sides of the nose to corners of the lips) and marionette lines (the lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin).
Patients who come to our Miami cosmetic surgery practice to address facial wrinkles are very happy with the results they have received from injections of Restylane® Refyne and Defyne, both of which have given them natural-looking results.
What is Restylane® Refyne and Defyne?
Both Restylane Refyne and Defyne are made from Hyaluronic Acid, which is naturally produced by the body and used to provide hydration and flexibility to the skin (as well as the eyes and joints in your body). You can find hyaluronic acid (often abbreviated on labels as HA) in many skin creams and even in eye drops.
Galderma formulated both products with XpresHAn Technology™ that uses what is called cross-linking to simultaneously provide support and flexibility. Therefore, both of these HA fillers maintain natural movements while treating creases and smile lines. In general, Refyne™ is used for moderate wrinkles while Defyne is used for deeper lines. Both products last up to a year after injection.
Who Can Use Restylane® Refyne and Defyne?
Healthy adults over the age of 21 who want to minimize wrinkles from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds) and/or from the mouth to the chin (marionette lines) and who do not have a history of any severe allergic reactions, or allergic reactions to HA fillers or lidocaine may be ideal candidates for Restylane® Refyne and/or Defyne to treat wrinkles in the nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Your Restylane® Refyne and Defyne Consultation
As with any cosmetic treatment, your consultation appointment is your opportunity to ask any questions about Restylane® Refyne and Restylane Defyne. Your aesthetician or cosmetic surgeon will also ask you questions about any allergic reactions you may have had in the past.
How is Restylane® Refyne and Defyne Injected?
After applying a cream anesthetic, the area(s) are cleaned in preparation for injection, which is tailored to address your areas of concern. An ice pack will be given for you to apply for a few minutes before you leave our Miami cosmetic surgery office to go about your day.
Recovery after Restylane® Refyne and Defyne
There are no specific recovery issues associated with Restylane® Refyne or Restylane® Defyne other than some discomfort at the injection sites and, in some patients, minor swelling that dissipates fairly quickly.
How Long Do Restylane® Refyne and Defyne Results Last?
You will immediately see minimized wrinkles in the treated area(s), which will last up to a year post-injection. Facial movements while smiling and frowning are maintained so that the results look natural.
