Breast augmentation at our Miami cosmetic surgery practice is one of our most popular plastic surgery procedures. Across the US, millions of women enjoy a more beautiful bustline thanks to the latest and safest FDA-approved implants. Nonetheless, over 30,000 women each year choose to remove their breast implants, called explantation by surgeons, for a range of reasons.
What is Breast Implant Removal?
Breast implant removal is the surgical removal of one or both breast implants for one or more of the following reasons:
- The patient desires to go down in breast size.
- A capsular contracture exists, which is scar tissue around the implant, resulting in pain and distortion of the implant.
- Implant failure: rupture or leaking of one or both implants.
- The implant is intact, but its position has shifted.
- There is wrinkling, sagging or asymmetry of one or both implants.
- The patient has a breast disease that requires implant removal.

Your Breast Implant Removal Consultation
At your breast implant removal consultation, your surgeon will discuss your goals with you: do you want them replaced? Do you want a bigger size? A smaller size? Do you need a breast lift? At the end of your consultation, you will be able to define your future plan and schedule a surgery date as well as have the quote for your procedure.
The Breast Implant Removal Procedure
Breast implant revision surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Most often the incision is made at the site of the original incision, which is usually beneath the breast in the area where the breast meets the chest wall, called the inframammary fold. If you wish to replace the implants, your choice of implant type and size will be used. You may also have a breast lift if your skin will be loose after your implants are removed or if your breasts are sagging even with replacement implants. All of this will have been decided at your private consultation.
Recovery from Breast Implant Revision Surgery
As with other breast surgeries, most patients return to work and/or social activities within a few days unless more than a simple implant exchange was performed. Your Miami cosmetic surgeon will instruct you about avoiding heavy lifting and any exercise that uses the chest muscles. Women who have had a total capsulectomy and bilateral implant removal may have had drains inserted during surgery. If so, your surgeon will instruct you about how to collect the fluid and when they will be removed in a future postop appointments. You should avoid heat and sun exposure during your recovery.
Results of Breast Implant Removal
Depending on your reason(s) for breast implant removal, you may either have breasts without implants or with new implants. Either decision will affect your final appearance. Swelling and postoperative changes to your breasts will require healing, which takes time. It may be a year before you can see your final results. To see the best results, it is always advisable to carefully follow your cosmetic surgeon’s post-operative and aftercare instructions. All your post-op appointments will be included in the price of surgery.
Note
Although breast implants can function just fine for quite some time, they are not guaranteed to be permanent. In particular, keep in mind that damage to a silicone gel implant can occur without your knowledge. The company that created your implants may have a program that contributes financially to replacement, depending upon the reason to remove and/or replace the implant.
